Hi, I implemented a very similar code, but both with my solution and with yours I had the same issue.

All works fine only if the app is in the foreground, in the background the song continues to play, but stops at the end.

Any actions (e.g. replacing the playerItem or seekToTime:kCMTimeZero) produces the same result, the notification is received also in the background, the code is executed but any action with AVPlayer object has no effect

Try rebooting the phone.
Try deleting the app and reinstalling it from the app store.

If it still is closing right after you open the app then it's a larger issue that I'll need to fix. I also have recently found someone who has a 3GS to test and they were able to download 1.3.9 and it has been working for them, I will continue testing and see if I can determine what the problem is that is causing the app to close immediately.

I will definitley look into this issue and do further testing. You can try setting the fade-in timer to both off one time, and 1 minute another to see if one or the other setting solves the issue.If you can give me the following info that might help me debug your issue: App Version, Device Type (iphone, ipad), iOS Version(3.1.3, 4.2.1, etc)I just tested Snooz 1.3.9 on an iphone4 (4.2.1) device setting the sleep timer very low, and the alarm volume on high, starting playing music, turning the sleep timer on, and then the alarm went off at the correct high volume.I will continue to test this issue and thank you very much for your feedback.

Thanks for posting your fix. I am going to put up a full example soon because the current post was just meant to show off how AVPlayer can be used for background music playback.

Found it. You have to add this line when initializing with AVPlayer:

[[AVAudioSession sharedInstance] setCategory:AVAudioSessionCategoryPlayback error:nil];

Hi,
Thanks for posting this. I tried it, and it plays audio just fine, but the playback stops when I go to the background. I added the correct key in the Info.plist file for my project, but no luck. Is there anything else that needs to be done to continue playing audio in the background? Thanks.

UPDATE: 1.3.8.3 is now out in the app store.
Yes, the update failed on non-multitasking devices and needed to be pulled from the store to prevent people from downloading the error. Apple does not allow rolling back to the previous release. Sorry for your inconvenience.

This Appl seems to have disappeared from the store...and my iTunes is determined to update it, but keeps telling me it's unavailable. What's going on?
